She wakes before the sun, the scent of damp hay thick in the air as she pulls on her wool stockings and leather shoes. The cows must be milked, the eggs collected, the butter churned before the men return from the fields. Her hands are calloused, her face sun-kissed, and though her life is hard, she would not trade it for the silk-draped idleness of a fine lady. She knows the land, and the land knows her.
