A field guide page rendered in watercolor and ink on aged paper, documenting the seasonal cycle of a fabricated tree species in four illustrations in a two-by-two grid with season labels. Spring shows a modest tree with white blossoms, convincingly normal. Summer shows the blossoms matured into open eyes — iris blue and hazel, petals becoming lids, the tree watching from dozens of organic eyes among healthy leaves. Autumn depicts the eyes closing, some fallen to the ground like fleshy leaves in brown and dull blue, foliage turning gold around the sleeping eyes. Winter shows bare branches draped in trailing pale strands of optic nerve tissue hanging like Spanish moss, connecting nothing to nothing. Annotations in copperplate describe each seasonal phenomenon in clinical botanical language. The palette shifts seasonally unified by the aged cream paper.
