The defiant call of war horns shakes the air, mixed with the screams of eagles circling over the bloody field. The fortress rises like a stone giant atop a steep hill, its towers shadowing the sky, shrouded in smoke from burning torches. Its walls, built of massive stone blocks, are pierced by hundreds of arrows and bloodied by the bodies of defenders who hug each other with their last strength. The attackers: On the flanks, battering rams with iron battering rams batter the gates while sappers with picks and shovels dig tunnels under the foundations of the fortress to bring down the walls. Above all, the “Wild Head” rises – a battering ram with a wolf’s tooth shackle, each blow of which turns the oak gate into wooden shavings. Soldiers with mantiles (movable wooden shields) cover the archers as they cross a moat filled with thorns and mud. Thousands of soldiers in rusty chain mail and black leather armor invade like a sea wave. At their head is a knight on a warrior, dressed in shiny steel armor with a coat of arms on his shield - a fiery rose. Before them roll massive siege towers, wooden monsters on wheels, covered with wet hides to protect against fire. Between them move catapults and trebuchets – giant throwing machines whose counterweights hurl rocks and rotting corpses over the walls. A burning resin ball, fired from an onager (a type of catapult), hits the west tower, scattering flames like hellish tongues.
