Social ostracism and the obviously immoral way of life are understood by her as a daily human cross, a sacrifice for others. Subject is an extremely religious girl who deeply believes in God's mercy. Thanks to these qualities, she reaches the hardened soul of Raskolnikov, initiating a change in him. Thus, the character is a fascinating combination of the merciful Mary Magdalene and a harlot.
