A white round obelisk rises above a dead, lifeless wasteland and rests against an equally dead, grey sky. The obelisk was gigantic, occupying the entire focus of the painting. At its foot several human figures stood frozen, bowing in awe before the monstrous structure. Some were prostrate on the ground, others were kneeling, clasping their hands in a prayerful gesture. The figures were blurred, indistinct, like other details, as if emphasizing the grandeur of the tower and the insignificance of everything else.
