clarity, Entire frame washed deep blood red, one soft source above, two values, heavy grain, print-scan texture. A face fills the frame, submerged to the chin in perfectly still red water — only the face is above the surface, everything below it dissolved into the dark red beneath. The water is glass-flat and gives her back exactly, so the picture is her face and its mirror meeting at the lip line, doubled and symmetrical. Her eyes are open and looking straight up out of the frame. Her hair spreads out around her head just under the surface as dark threads, visible through the red. A blown-out source somewhere above lays one hard white highlight across her forehead, the bridge of her nose and the wet of both eyes, and dies immediately; the rest is red going to black at every edge. Nothing breaks the surface but her. Red, blown white, black. Vertical, cropped hard, no shore, no scale. Calm and drowned.
