An authentic 17th-century Dutch Golden Age oil on aged linen, hand-painted, with visible pigment, glazed shadows and painterly edges. A young adult kitchen maid stands at a table pouring a thin stream of milk from a red earthenware jug into a glazed brown bowl, head lowered, eyes on her work, calm and absorbed. Stiff white linen cap, mustard yellow bodice with rolled blue and muted green sleeves above sturdy forearms, white collar, deep ultramarine apron over a dull red skirt. The table has a dark blue-green cloth, a wicker basket of coarse bread rolls, a broken crusty loaf and a blue-grey stoneware jug. A leaded window at left, one pane damaged, admits soft cool daylight. Pale whitewashed plaster behind her, a wicker basket and brass pail on nails. A low wooden foot warmer near the floor and a row of blue-and-white Delft tiles. Vertical three-quarter-length view slightly below eye level. Soft window light from the left, restrained chiaroscuro. Ultramarine, lead-tin yellow, warm ochre, cream, umber, muted grey. Painted forms, brushwork, shadow glazes, small impasto on bread, pottery and folds. Dense craquelure across the whole canvas, linen weave, oxidized amber varnish, not photographic.
