An elderly wise man sits cross-legged before a low fire, his back slightly hunched, both hands raised at chest height with palms open toward the flames. His face is deeply lined, weathered skin folded into heavy creases across the forehead and around a firm, closed mouth, framed by long grey-white hair parted down the middle and two thin braids hanging past his collarbone, each braid wrapped near the end with a dark leather cord and a single small feather. His eyes are narrowed, dark irises fixed on some point beyond the fire. He wears a heavy fur-trimmed cloak over bare shoulders, its collar made of thick tufted fur in a mottled brown-and-cream pattern, and a wide beaded band crosses his chest diagonally, strung with rows of small rounded beads in turquoise, red and bone-white. The fire between his knees is a solid cluster of jagged orange and yellow shapes stacked over blackened logs, throwing a wide warm glow across his hands, chest and the underside of his jaw. Behind him, pale smoke rises and thickens into three large translucent animal forms: a wolf's head tipped back mid-howl on the left, a broad-winged eagle with spread feathers at the center, and the hunched outline of a bear rearing on its hind legs to the right, all three rendered as pale blue-white shapes with only their outer edges and a few internal lines visible against the darkness, as though made of the same smoke that formed them. Loose stones ring the fire pit, and a flat hide drum leans against one of his knees, its surface marked with a faded painted spiral.
